Harry & Jason- Great stuff on the you tube. Need details if you don't mind. Fly, rod, reel, and situational details?

Re: "You tube" Cobia

Thanks Ron!

Cobes were from the beach to 10 miles out. No real set spots, just run and gun to find them on the surface, Florida style. Jason actually had the eagle eye going, and was spotting the cobia way off. We had actually hit this pair once, threw on 'em, they followed, then ducked under the boat. A minute later, they popped back up about 30 yards away. Got in front of them, turned the bow, Jason fired an awesome cast, and this time there was no doubt it was going to happen. The fish bum rushed the fly, mouth wide open coming at the boat, awesome take to say the least. The fly was kind of eely, but not mine to give details on, sorry. But, it also got it's share of refusals as well, we probably threw at 24 cobia that day.(Maybe more, hard to add up the packs of 3 or more) Rod= 10wt TFO TiCRX   Reel= Ross Big Game(I think a number 8 or 9) Tippet=20lb mono (I'm now thinking fluoro would be better, I think the mono spooked a couple of the fish) Fairly short leaders, maybe 6ft. I'm not sure on the rest of his setup. Pretty sure it was an intermediate line as well.(We had a lot of rods rigged differently on the boat, not sure which line he had in hand) We only had one cobia come in while we chummed for sharks for an hour or so, and it blazed right on through. I think we caught 5 rat BlackTips, and had one bruiser BlackTip come in and spook out a couple of times. I'm still looking for that 6ft plus shark to test my 13-15wt rod on.

...and for anyone who has never eaten Cobia, it's firm and white meat, with little fish taste. Very similar to Wahoo. Basically it will take on whatever recipe you give it.

I'll warn you ahead of time, there are two types of cobia; the ones that eat right off the bat, and the ones that follow every fly you throw right to the boat. 90% of the time it's the later, or maybe it's I'm doing it wrong 100% of the time, and get a 10% luck ratio. Cobia are bruisers, and you better bring your "A" game when it comes to landing one. This is deffinently not a fish that will come to the boat and shake your hand. They always have a spare can of woop ass waiting for that gaff or net and the person holding it. I would suggest a BIG net to land one, so that you can net 'em and let em thrash in the water, instead of in the boat destroying everything including yourself. If you try to let them thrash on the gaff, you will most likely lose the fish when it pops of the gaff, and snaps the tippet.(Seen it happen a few times) Don't forget about the switchblade spines that come up out of their back either. Not trying to be Safety Sam, but this is a fish that deserves your full attention in the end game.

Good luck and tight lines on getting some everyone. If ya see me out there, give a shout, I'm usually on 68.

Later, Harry
